"“Transgender” is a term that has emerged fairly recently and is used to describe anybody who feels their gender identity and expression is different to that which was assigned to them at birth (based only on the viewing of their genitalia). A transgender may be a woman or a man, and like any woman or man, they can be heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual. Therefore, their sexuality is not their gender. "

I happily agree with many points in this article. I fundamentally disagree with the quotation cited above, however. TG-status may include gender dysphoria, true, but it is not restricted to that. For the writer to boldly assert that it is so restricted suggests more than just a harmless display of ignorance.

What a crock of nonsense. A TS (who is transgendered by definition) would fall into this category, sure. But cross-dressers might not. I don't, and I'm hardly a TV.

Is the author of this article presuming to tell me that because I don't fit his impossibly stilted definition of what a TG is that I am not transgendered?

He may say that he isn't, but that would be dishonest. He is indeed saying that..

I am not blaming you in any way for this article, Raina. I think your having listed it as a link was indeed provocative and interesting. That said, I think the author's head is up his proverbial butt.

He's right about differentiating sexual orientation from the term transgender. That said, he appears to be overly snobbish--not to mention clueless--about that TG is all about.

It is sad that while much of the article indeed rings true, the author's own biases--restrictive, prejudicial and very invidious biases--have so insinuated themselves into his argument.

      Point of clarification:

The author of the article (Dane) wasn't the person (Dee) to whom this offensive quote was attributed.

Still, Dee appears to be cited as an expert, and I believe she is a nitwit. I find it sad when transsexuals seem to want to expropriate the term TG only for themselves, or when TVs endeavor to do the same.

I find it equally ludicrous (and frankly, very unimaginative) when I read that the term "TG" is associated ONLY with TS's or TV's. The tent is big enough for everyone, folks. We don't need to define ourselves in terms that reinforce the stereotypes that are out there.

'Transgender' just means that in one way or another, the person to whom that term is applied is indeed a gender outlaw. There is no Bible that will tell us what the word means, no Pope who will tell us what it does not mean. Let's hope that the definitions we come up with make sense and do not exclude (or inadvertently insult) many worthy people who would otherwise fall into this category.
